A complete list of all good books on the environment would require
a volume ten times this size. However, the following list represents
some good sources for more information on the issues presented
in this book. Many of these publishers and/or organizations produced
the books that are referenced at the end of each chapter. Some
are available free of charge, others are for sale. Contact the
relevant publisher for information.

Information Available from UNEPInformation Available from
UNEP
Together with governments, international organizations, scientific
and professional communities and non-governmental organizations,
UNEP motivates and co-ordinates worldwide environmental action.
UNEP's activities include global environmental quality monitoring,
environmental management planning, environmental law, public information,
and education and training. As part of this activity, UNEP produces,
compiles and organizes a vast amount of information that is useful
to community organizations working in fields of environmental
preservation and sustainability. Much of this information is at
UNEP's headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, but a significant amount
is available through its worldwide regional offices or on-line
through the Internet. For a free catalog of UNEP publications,
contact a UNEP regional office nearest you. The addresses are
listed at the end of this section.
The Infoterra NetworkThe Infoterra Network
Reliable information is crucial for all sound decisions. Infoterra is one of the largest environmental information supply systems in the world. It handles more than 24,000 queries a year through its national focal points in 155 countries and its headquarters in Nairobi. Infoterra can be a valuable information resource for community organizations. If they do not have the information, they will provide the leads to people who do. There is an Infoterra National Focal Point in nearly every United Nations member country. Write to the Infoterra office c/o UNEP's Nairobi headquarters for a local contact.
For organizations with access to an e-mail account, Infoterra
operates a subscription listserv for users to exchange information
on environmental issues. If you pose a question, others on the
list will do their best to answer it for you., based on their
own experience and knowledge. To subscribe to the listserv, send
an e-mail message to "listproc@pan.cedar.unive.ac.at".
Leave the subject line in the message blank, and type the following
command on the first line of your message: "subscribe Infoterra
(your name)." You will receive back a confirmation with instructions
on how to participate in the list.
Bridging that Gap with GRIDBridging that Gap with GRID
The Global Resource Information Database (GRID), was established by UNEP in 1985. It works as an environmental data management support service to decision makers and scientists all over the world. Access to the material stored in GRID allows scientists to understand earth processes as well as implement sound management of the environment.
GRID uses computer technology to produce environmental maps and
printouts, satellite images and aerial surveys. Computer network-connected
community organizations can access all GRID information easily
through the UNEP home page on the World Wide Web of the Internet
(http://www.unep.ch), or through the gopher (gopher://unep.unep.no).
Hard copies of all GRID data are available to community organizations
that do not have access to computer networks. For information,
contact a regional UNEP office that is listed at the end of this
section.
