Items of relevance
to
UNEP at the 58th Session of the General Assembly
As reflected in the
general debate,
security issues, reform of the UN and the global economy will dominate
the 58th session of the General Assembly. The session will also
consider a number of issues related to environment and sustainable
development, and thus of direct relevance to the work of UNEP. The two
main items for UNEP will be discussions in the second committee on the
follow-up to WSSD, specifically the outcome of CSD 11 and preparations
for CSD 12, and the consideration of the Report of UNEP’s Governing
Council at its 22nd session/GMEF. Although the general debate in the
second committee also focused mainly on economic and trade issues, it
is expected that emphasis will continue to be placed on implementation
with regard to the outcome of major UN conferences, particularly WSSD.
UNEP’s New York Office will be closely following these discussions, as
well as other issues of relevance to UNEP’s work, as listed below.
UNEP introduced the
report of its Governing Council on its twenty-second session to the
second committee on 16 October 2003 as it begun deliberations on agenda
item 94 'Environment ans Sustainable Development', with a statement delivered on behalf of its
Executive Director.
