Items of relevance to UNEP at the 58th Session of the General Assembly

As reflected in the general debate, security issues, reform of the UN and the global economy will dominate the 58th session of the General Assembly. The session will also consider a number of issues related to environment and sustainable development, and thus of direct relevance to the work of UNEP. The two main items for UNEP will be discussions in the second committee on the follow-up to WSSD, specifically the outcome of CSD 11 and preparations for CSD 12, and the consideration of the Report of UNEP’s Governing Council at its 22nd session/GMEF. Although the general debate in the second committee also focused mainly on economic and trade issues, it is expected that emphasis will continue to be placed on implementation with regard to the outcome of major UN conferences, particularly WSSD. UNEP’s New York Office will be closely following these discussions, as well as other issues of relevance to UNEP’s work, as listed below.
