With
the role and influence of civil society greatly
expanding within the international community,
the New York Office has a key role in developing
and maintaining active contacts with UN-affiliated
non-governmental organizations (NGOs), foundations,
private sector corporations, academic institutions
and others. Through various outreach initiatives
and products, the Office builds support among
such groups for the work of UNEP, providing
them with information, and facilitating the
transmittal of their views and information to
other substantive units within UNEP. The Office
maintains a network of media contacts in an
effort to ensure that environmental issues,
problems, and the UN’s role in their solution,
are featured appropriately and targeted to the
right audiences. The Office also works closely
with the UN Department of Public Information
(DPI), and the Spokesman for the Secretary-General,
and organizes special events and exhibits at
UN Headquarters.

The Office serves as a media
link between UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi and
UN Headquarters in New York. It also promotes
the inclusion of the environmental dimension
within the messages, services and products of
the UN Department of Public Information devoted
to sustainable development and international
economic cooperation.
The New York Office develops and maintains a
proactive relationship with UN-affiliated non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), foundations, private sector
corporations, academic institutions and others.
It builds support among such groups for the
work of the UN in the international environmental
field and the role of UNEP as the environmental
conscience of the UN system. In particular it
has developed fruitful cooperation with the
information and telecommmunications industry,
religious and faith communities, and indigenous
peoples. The Office also provides
briefings on UNEP activities to a wide variety
of visiting groups from the academic community
and civil society, either directly or through
the UN Department of Public Information.
The Office regularly organzies
special events and exhibitions at UNHQ often
in observance of major international environmental
days and years. In particular, it hosts the
UNHQ observances of World Environment Day, Earth
Day and the presentation of the annual UNEP
Sasakawa Environment Prize.
